More than just traditional natural gas is transported using pipelines. Here are several other relevant commodities.
Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)
RNG is typically created in landfills or special facilities associated with agriculture. It is often processed to the point where it can be used interchangeably with traditional natural gas including using the existing pipelines and equipment without modification.
Wisconsin has several RNG operators shown at the bottom table of the
Natural Gas Operators page. These operators have pipelines that transport gas to specific customers or to connection points where it gets mixed into the traditional natural gas pipelines. In total, these operators have 36 miles of gas pipeline in Wisconsin at the beginning of 2026.
The Wisconsin Pipeline Safety Program regulates all operators on
the
Natural Gas Operators page. All of these operators are subject to federal code, state code, and order points from the PSC.
Hydrogen Blending
Blending a small percentage of hydrogen into natural gas has been proposed as a way to reduce emissions. Some operators outside of Wisconsin are exploring this possibility. It is not clear if hydrogen can be mixed into natural gas and utilize the existing natural gas infrastructure or if modifications would be needed.
Currently no operators in Wisconsin blend hydrogen into natural gas. If any were to start, they would be regulated the same as any other natural gas facility.
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
CO2 is a stable, non-flammable, odorless gas. It may be captured from emissions and transported in pipelines for storage or utilization. This can be for carbon capture, energy production, or creating products. It can be efficiently transported using pipelines from where it is generated to where it is used or stored.
Currently no operators in Wisconsin have CO2 pipelines. With current state laws the PSC would not have jurisdiction over CO2 pipeline operators.
