Area Code Relief - 920/274 Area Code Overlay Implementation Schedule

On December 11, 2008, NANPA conducted the Initial Implementation Meeting for the 920/274 overlay.   In compliance with the Commission’s Final Decision, Wisconsin’s telecommunications industry reached consensus on a schedule to implement the 274 area code, as described in NANPA’s Planning Letter 385.

Start of Permissive 10- digit Dialing

During the permissive dialing period, customers are encouraged to begin using 10-digit dialing to place all local calls (the 3-digit area code + the 7-digit local number).  However, local calls will still complete if a caller dials only the 7-digit number.

Once mandatory 10-digit dialing begins, callers must use the 3-digit area code and the 7-digit number for all local calls.  Calls incorrectly dialed will reach a recording indicating that it is necessary to dial the area code and the 7-digit telephone number.
