I accidentally connected to my Internet Service
Provider (ISP) using a long distance telephone number and I have
a large bill. Am I responsible for the charges?
In most cases, you will be. The PSC has received numerous complaints from consumers with telephone bills in the hundreds of dollars, just for accessing the internet. However, since the PSC doesn't regulate the internet or internet service providers, there is little that can be done after the fact. Consumers should verify whether or not their dial-up number is a local call by contacting their local telephone company before connecting to the internet. For more information on this topic, read the PSC brochure, Accessing the Internet. |
