Telephone Number Portability
Can I keep my existing telephone number if I switch to another telephone
company or if I move to another address?
Telephone number portability allows customers to keep their existing telephone number when they switch to
another local telephone company. Many customers are reluctant to choose a new local service provider if
it means having to change telephone numbers. To promote competition in telecommunication markets,
Congress enacted the Telecommunication Act of 1996. The Act requires local telephone companies to offer
number portability service.
Geographic portability, the ability to keep your telephone number when moving to a new location, across town, or across the country, is not generally available at this time. For more information including an explanation of the LNP charge on customer billing, see Understanding Your Phone Bill or visit the FCC's website.
