Conserve Wisconsin
In mid-August, Governor Jim Doyle unveiled Conserve Wisconsin, a package of legislation
and executive orders to safeguard Wisconsin’s environmental legacy. The agenda focuses
on protecting our waterways, conserving our lands, revitalizing urban neighborhoods and
promoting energy conservation and innovation.

Water Conservation
Wisconsin water utilities are charged with the responsibility of providing clean water to
consumers at reasonable rates. Recent Wisconsin groundwater legislation and the regional
Great Lakes Water Quantity Agreements ask that, as a state we also protect the environment
by protecting groundwater and surface water quantity and quality, while we continue to ensure
the safety of our drinking water supply. To address this new directive and support the Conserve
Wisconsin Agenda, Governor Jim Doyle has requested that the PSC and the DNR work together with
utilities, consumers and other stakeholders to identify demand side conservation alternatives
that will help reduce water demand and use.
As part of the Conserve Wisconsin agenda, Governor Doyle has called on the Public Service
Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to work
together with important stakeholders to develop a statewide water conservation strategy focusing
on demand side water conservation initiatives. Water conservation is a key step to protecting
the quality and enjoyment of Wisconsin’s abundant water resources. A final report outlining
a menu of demand side conservation measures will be presented to the Governor in September 2006.
