Midwest Renewable Energy Tracking System (M-RETS)
In April 2007, Governor Jim Doyle and the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin announced that Wisconsin had taken the lead in the Midwest to implement a regional renewable energy tracking system. The Midwest Regional Energy Tracking System (M-RETS) tracks renewable energy generation that assists participants in meeting their individual renewable energy portfolios. Wisconsin joins the states of Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota and the province of Manitoba in implementing this system. The agreement marks a milestone in meeting the region’s renewable energy goals and promotes more renewable energy development.
This tool helps these jurisdictions collect data on renewable energy production and provides a mechanism for monitoring their respective goals. It will also promote trading credits with neighboring jurisdictions in the region to help in meeting policy requirements.
In July 2007, the PSC launched the system and is now leading the way to create a market-based trading program that will keep the costs of renewable energy down and will encourage more renewable energy development – helping Wisconsin meet Governor Doyle’s challenge to provide 25% of the state’s energy from renewables by the year 2025.
The PSC will be working with APX, Inc. to implement the system. APX Inc. is North America’s leading technology and administration provider for environmental and energy markets. Several other states and provinces in the region are also expected to join as the program progresses.
